No-Man – Mixtaped (double dvd preorder)

Posted in no-man by David Mytton on September 2, 2009

Mixtaped:

The first ever DVD release from No-Man.

Comprising the band’s sell-out performance at London’s Bush Hall in 2008, a comprehensive career-spanning documentary, Returning, and numerous extras (including newly commissioned and archive video footage), Mixtaped provides a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the band.

Returning:

Directed by award winning journalist Richard Smith, Returning is the story of No-Man.

At the start of their career, No-Man were described as ‘conceivably the most important band since The Smiths’ (Melody Maker). Almost 20 years later, Uncut claimed the band as ‘Britain’s most underrated sorrowful sonic architects’.

Returning reveals for the first time the No-Man’s full history from their roots in a teenager’s bedroom to an unsuccessful career in mainstream Pop; from near obscurity to increasing cult success.

Returning is the story of two musicians who’ve stuck to their belief in the transformative power of popular music, and the music industry’s sometimes tense relationships with art, commerce and its audience.

Comes with an audio CD of highlights from the Bush Hall performance exclusive to Burning Shed.

No-Man Wherever There Is Light ep and Mixtaped DVD detail

Posted in no-man by David Mytton on August 1, 2009

Acting as a bridge between No-Man’s elegiac 2008 return Schoolyard Ghosts and the forthcoming live concert DVD Mixtaped, Wherever There Is Light is a strictly limited edition release.

From Schoolyard Ghosts, the poignant title track features guest performances from US pedal steel legend Bruce Kaphan (American Music Club/Red House Painters) and Theo Travis.

The alt-country tinged Death Was California and the atmospheric Counting are two new songs especially written for the EP, while Carolina Skeletons and All The Blue Changes are the first recordings released from No-Man’s Autumn 2008 mini-tour.

Also containing Grant Wakefied’s poetic video for the title track, a powerful preview from the Mixtaped DVD, and striking Carl Glover designed artwork, the enhanced Wherever There Is Light EP is a rare and beautiful thing from the band Uncut memorably described as ‘Britain’s most underrated sorrowful sonic architects’.

Wherever There Is Light is already available from the Kscope store but will available in stores from August 24th.

Click here for the web page for the Wherever There Is Light, which features audio samples from the ep, as well as live footage of title track Wherever There Is Light, taken from the Mixtaped DVD.

Mixtaped is a double DVD set and will be available from September 28th. The set comprises the band’s sell-out performance at London’s Bush Hall in 2008, a comprehensive career-spanning documentary, and numerous extras (including newly commissioned and archive video footage), and provides a fascinating insight into one of British music’s most unusual cult heroes.

Porcupine Tree / No-Man DVD release updates

Posted in no-man, Porcupine Tree by David Mytton on March 13, 2009

The Porcupine Tree DVD of the Fear of a Blank Planet tour cycle has been delayed and will not be released until 2010 at the earliest, according to a recent interview with Steven Wilson. This is because the band is focusing on the new album, slated for release in September 2009.

The No-Man DVD is completed and in the same interview Steven suggested a release date of May 2009.

No-Man DVD Update & New Tracks

Posted in no-man by David Mytton on December 24, 2008

Posted by Tim Bowness:

The live DVD, both in terms of audio soundtrack and visuals, has now been completed (and approved by myself and the man Wilson). A lovely looking document of a special performance, it successfully captures the soulful fragility and gritty dynamics of a performance that, for me at least, suggested new sonic possibilities for future No-Man music.

More interviews have been conducted for the documentary. Despite Richard Smith’s professionalism and encouraging presence, yet again I think I realised how much I’d rather have silence as my soundtrack to what I’m sure will be an interesting chronicle of No-Man’s career. Hopefully, Richard will agree to present me as a wildly gesticulating mute, or just write me out of my own history altogether!

Words often seem inadequate to express intensely emotional experiences, and in conveying hopes and ideas I always feel embarrassed by how pretentious and repetitious they can sound spoken out loud. Overall, I’m left feeling that interviews (especially on camera) only seem to express a small aspect of a personality. On a personal level, I always feel as I’ve let both myself and the music down by being so woefully inarticulate. 2009 resolution number one – never speak again!

The two new No-Man studio pieces are coming together nicely and ‘Maestro’ Steve Bingham has added some mighty fine violin to the No-Man version of The Place Where You’d Hide. The pieces, which aren’t scheduled for a new album, are likely to appear as extras on the forthcoming DVD, or as downloads.

At the moment, we’re hoping that both DVDs will still be ready for a Spring 2009 release.
