No-Man Wherever There Is Light video now online
Schoolyard Ghosts, the new album from No-Man, is released on Monday.
Written and recorded between Autumn 2007 and Spring 2008, Schoolyard Ghosts is a distinctive combination of beautifully detailed songwriting, haunting melodies and inventively cinematic production. The album sees No-Man’s core duo of Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson expanding the band’s sonic palette by collaborating with, amongst others Californian pedal steel ace Bruce Kaphan, saxophonist/flautist Theo Travis, drummers Pat Mastelotto and Gavin Harrison, and the London Session Orchestra (arranged by Dave Stewart).
Schoolyard Ghosts reveals the band taking its accessible and ambitious blend of Post-Rock and Singer-songwriter influences to an even more focused and personalised place than before.
The video for Wherever There Is Light is premiering on the Schoolyard Ghosts mini-site from today. Go to www.kscopemusic.com/no-man to watch the video.

New No-Man album – Schoolyard Ghosts
No-Man’s sixth studio album, ‘Schoolyard Ghosts’, is scheduled for release on KScope/Snapper Records on 12th May 2008.
Compared to its predecessor (2003′s atmospheric ‘Together We’re Stranger’) ‘Schoolyard Ghosts’ shows the band moving towards an altogether purer and more personal place, far removed from the art pop/indie dance experiments of its acclaimed 1993 One Little Indian debut release, ‘Loveblows & Lovecries’.
A distinctive combination of beautifully detailed songwriting, haunting melodies and inventively cinematic production, ‘Schoolyard Ghosts’ sees Tim and Steven expanding the band’s sonic palette yet again by collaborating with (amongst others) Californian pedal steel guitar ace Bruce Kaphan (American Music Club, Red House Painters), drummers Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mastica) and Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson), saxophonist/flautist Theo Travis, and the London Session Orchestra arranged by Dave Stewart (Hatfield & The North, Egg, Stewart & Gaskin etc).
Featuring the hypnotic ‘Wherever There Is Light’, the warped dynamism of ‘Pigeon Drummer’, the outsider lament of ‘All Sweet Things’ and the subtly evolving explorations of the uplifting 13-minute semi-orchestral epic ‘Truenorth’, ‘Schoolyard Ghosts’ represents the band’s most consistent and mature work to date and looks set to build upon the success of predecessors ‘Returning Jesus’ and ‘Together We’re Stranger’.
The album was written and recorded between Autumn 2007 and Steven during the January 2008 recording sessions Spring 2008 in No-Man’s Land, Hemel Hempstead, UK; with additional recording in Norwich (UK), Lille (France), Vimmerby (Sweden), New York City, Austin and California (USA). Final orchestral sessions are being recorded in London in mid-March.
The full album tracklisting has been confirmed as follows:
- All Sweet Things
- Beautiful Songs You Should Know
- Pigeon Drummer
- Truenorth
- Wherever There Is Light
- Song Of The Surf
- Streaming
- Mixtaped
Further details on the album will follow closer to the release date. A promotional ‘Schoolyard Ghosts’ microsite is scheduled for launch soon on the K-Scope homepage.

2008 Update
Having been on the road for almost the entirety of 2007, Steven is now busy in the studio working on 2 brand new albums. One of these is his first ever song based solo project, something which will reveal a darker musical side of SW not hitherto heard in any of his other projects. The solo album is a work in progress with no set release date, but material is coming thick and fast, so a release sometime towards the end of this year seems likely.
Also well underway and expected to be issued in May is the first album by No-Man in 5 years. It’s current working title is “Schoolyard Ghosts”. You can find more information on the no-man MySpace page.
Other new releases in the pipeline include the much delayed release of Bass Communion’s “Pacific Codex” box set, as well as a repress of the 2 CD version of “Ghosts on Magnetic Tape”, both in February. Meanwhile the 2008 edition of Porcupine Tree’s “Lightbulb Sun” album is expected in April as a CD/DVDA double disc set, and another new PT related release should be available from March on the band’s Transmission mail order imprint (details on the PT site soon).
Finally, due to demand Soleilmoon will press another 1,000 copies of the first album by Continuum, SW’s collaboration with Dirk Serries, bringing it up to par with the 2,000 copy edition of Continuum II. Scheduled for June release. Meanwhile after the first Continuum album was successfully reconstructed by Dirk himself on the Continuum Recyclings Volume One double LP, a highly talented and known musician from the experimental underground will recycle Continuum II for another double LP. More news on this soon – in the meantime check out the Continuum MySpace page for audio samples and updates.

No-Man – New Album Sesions, January 2008
In early January, No-Man continued writing and recording material for its sixth official studio release (tentatively titled, ‘Schoolyard Ghosts’), the band’s first album of new music for five years.
The album is due to be released on the K-Scope label in May 2008, and will feature contributions from a number of guest collaborators, as well as full string arrangements for several tracks.
Currently the band is in the process of recording overdubs and choosing the final running order.
Songs confirmed include ‘All Sweet Things’, ‘Mixtaped’, and the 14 minute, ‘Truenorth’.
The band are planning a European mini-tour, their first since 1993, to support the release of the album.

No-Man – Lighthouse (original demo) free download
Now available from www.burningshed.com:
Differing from all previously released versions and dating from March 1994, this free download is the first known demo of Lighthouse, and provides a fascinating insight into the genesis of the popular Returning Jesus track (the song was eventually issued with a vastly expanded arrangement and slightly altered lyric in 2001).
Please note, due to the loss of the source tapes, the quality of this mp3 is not to the high standard of other No-Man download releases.
You will need to create an account in order to download, but this will not cost you anything.
